Sustainable Yogic Agriculture (SYA), refers to agricultural and farming practices which involve bio-organic and natural inputs along with application of positive thinking, pure feelings and mind power. Thus it involves not only macro energy and materials but also micro energy as well as metaphysical inputs in terms of positive vibrations right from the stage of seed bed preparation, sowing, to harvesting and storage. It is a new innovative agricultural concept which involves modern farming with traditional knowledge SYA offeres to farmers an ancient method, integrating meditative practices in their daily lifestyles.The application of mind power for farming was easily envisaged and eventually implemented with very good results. SYA is yogic culture based agriculture with traditional Indian farming methods. Farmers uses organically based fertilizers and compost made from organic waste from the crops and cattle excretions maintain the originality of the environment.
In India agriculture had been practiced for 5,000 years without embarrassing the environment. This was only possible through the spiritual culture of unity in biodiversity. Once known for its past wealth in its culture and economy, India’s ancient heritage has been lost.
The innovative feature is drawn from a phenomenon that is attracting the attention of researchers - the effect of human thoughts and feelings on the environment and matter.
The farmers create positive thoughts and visualize their desired result at each stage of farming, from preparing the land for sowing to the time of harvesting, i.e. from seed to yield.
The financial and health costs of chemical farming and GM seeds, have increased depression and health problems in farmers. Knowledge of traditional farming practices is being lost, threatening trans-generational education. Due to these risks, younger generations are choosing alternate livelihoods.
Increased soil salinity and decreased soil microbes cause vulnerability to India’s climatic hazards of flood and drought. Organic farming practices aid in biodiversity and soil activity but often at the cost of crop yield and crop resilience. Laboratory studies show the spiritual technology of meditation –
• increases organic crop yield and crop resilience
• the limitations imposed by organic farming are addressed
• the strengths inherent in organic farming are furthered.
Meditation practices are culturally appropriate, acknowledging traditional beliefs and practices. Overseas SYA farmers moderate practices ensuring local suitability while maintaining core technologies.
As the food so is the mind’, this principle is reflected through yogic agriculture. The pure and positive vibrations radiated on the crop results in high nutritional value and easy assimilation of the nutrients. Thus it improves both the health of body and the mind. The farmer gets the benefits of low cost, high yield and high quality produce.
• Increase in the fertility levels i.e. Soil Microbial population showed higher microbial activity of Rhizobium, Azotobacter and Azospirlium
• Significant growth in friendly insects’ population and resilience towards pests.
• Iincrease in iron and zinc in Wheat, protein in Soya bean, Vitamins in the vegetables etc.,
• Local seeds and no chemicals (mostly petroleum based) are used at any stage of the process, therefore the carbon footprint is less.
Main beneficiaries are small and marginal farmers to enhance their living habitude and be more effective in farming methods. Higher net income of farmers and the return of local organic seed and bio-diverse fields is noted. The immediate and direct benefits of meditation increase the wellbeing of communities. This practice invites anyone involved to participate in applying meditative ‘inputs,’ producing individual empowerment and social cohesion.

Farmers willing to return to organic farming were unable to due to a reduced crop yield. When organic methods are integrated with meditative technology, the yield increases, making SYA a viable livelihood and sustainable option for their farming practices.
Headquarters‘ Coordinator of the Rural Development Wing, Mt. Abu, Rajasthan, BK Rajendra Gupta along with National Coordinator,BK Sarla, Mesana, Gujarat organise 20 Members across the States of Andrapradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttarpradesh and Uttarakhand to create an awareness.
Around 700 experienced farmers are now passing this knowledge and practice to other famers. An ancient practice in India was to consult the sages and rishis (holy men) before considering new perceptions/practices.
Brahma Kumaris Environment Initiative, which is active in over 120 countries is encourageing participation in this project. A few farmers have started to experiment with these ideas in – Australia, Greece, Italy, Maritius, South Africa and Switzerland.
Transition to this vibration-based technology involves considerations like the lack of trained farmers practicing Raja yoga Meditation and the rather set attitudes of policy makers and authorities. We encourage collaboration amongst the scientific community and conduct tours on farms, keeping farmer enthusiasm high.
We encourage farmers to set up micro-farms as a first step to reduce their initial risk. Once they are satisfied and experience positive results, they commonly adopt Yogic agriculture using natural farming methods.
• The use of live factors, organic manures and the herbal extracts with meditation help to control disease and pests.
• The use of compost prepared from animal excretions and crop residue, dung manure, organic manure and wormy manure certainly increase the production of crop and keep productive capacity of the land intact.
Biodiversity: SYA utilizes a system-wide approach supports farming without destroying it by recognizing all elements of farming: human, animals, birds, flying and crawling insects, micro-organisms, seeds, vegetation and the natural elements of soil, air and water.
Red and yellow coloured flags are hoisted in the fields which not only indicate wind and rain prognosis, but the grasshopper is attracted to the yellow colour and lays her eggs on the flag, to which they are not able to remain for long and thus a natural way to reduce their invasion occurs.
Product lifecycle:Through meditation practice at every stage of the crop cycle farmers have reported a longer shelf life of SYA crop products.
Scores of farmers who were not successful in organic farming practices are reaping the fruits of Sustainable Yogic Agriculture which combines organic methods of farming with spiritual technology of meditation. Farmers are satisfied with the improvement of the organic matter in the soil and enhanced productivity while achieving sustainable crop yields over the long term.
In Ichalkaranji, during a field observation project, we visited Balasaheb field. He was inspired by the teachings of the Rural Wing and had converted his whole farm into organic + yogic mode of cultivation. The quality of irrigation water of his farm is very poor, even though, he is getting better yield under meditation. Sugarcane and sweet corn is cultivated totally under meditation. He experienced that yield under meditation with organic farming is as good as chemical farming but the quality is superior. Many other such examples are available.
Wishing to share the merit of improved lives for small and marginal farmers, we have strategically conducted peer-to-peer information sharing sessions, conducted village gatherings to attract rural populations. Puppet shows, videos, radio and television spots to disseminate SYA information and expertise. We encourage collaboration among the scientific community and conduct tours on farms, keeping farmer enthusiasm high and we made several informative talk shows to be released on TV Channels. We have created short animation films in all Indian languages to attract the attention of the farmers. Dialogues, training programmes, farmer conferences, village conferences, exhibitions, retreats, participation in the agricultural fairs, demonstrations of the impact of meditated seeds etc., International collaboration has seen a few farmers in Europe, Africa, and Asia Pacific adopt SYA technology.
