In the E-Piim`s dairy produce different types of cheese and powders. Our own developed cheese is functional cheese called Heart-friendly cheese Harmony , that contains bacteria Lactobactillius plantarum TENSIA. Bacteria TENSIA has supportive effect to cardio-vascular functions and it lowers blood pressure

The Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences was formed on January 1, 2005 by amalgamation of the Institute of Animal Science, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the Estonian Agrobiocentre of the former Estonian Agricultural University. Institute's responsibility is to provide science based teaching and research in veterinary medicine, animal sciences, and meat and dairy technology to respond to the needs of the agricultural and food industry. Research conducted by the departments and working groups of the Institute involves almost all aspects of the “from farm to fork” production and processing chain of animal products. Institute has totally more than 215 emploees. Department of food sciences and hygiene includes teaching and research staff, technicians and several PhD students. Department is well experienced in life-long learning activities and involvement of public bodies. The laboratories of the Department of Food Science and Hygiene of the EMÜ are well equipped, recently renovated and well functioning units.

Heart-friendly cheese Harmony™ comprising Lactobacillus plantarum TENSIA helps to maintain heart health through lowering (high-normal) blood pressure Increased blood pressure is the main confounding factor for impaired functioning of the cardio-vascular system. Reduction of blood pressure for 5-10 mmHg is associated with 40% lower death risk. Consumption of Heart-friendly cheese Harmony comprising L. plantarum TENSIA reduces blood pressure and improves several atherosclerosis and oxidative stress markers without harmful impact on gut health, BMI, inflammatory markers or cholesterol. According to the results of clinical trials the Heart-friendly cheese Harmony™ comprising Lactobacillus plantarum TENSIA helps to maintain the cardio-vascular system and heart health through reduction of blood pressure and also by improvement of antioxidant defence of human body. Heart-Friendly Cheese Harmony™ is a natural way to support human health together with physical activity and healthy diet.

Elaboration of the Lactobacillus Planatrum strain Tensia ( a multipotent microbe of a healthy child origin with the ability to produce compounds possesing direct or indirect blood pressure lowering effect, anatgonistic against foodborne pathogens and with moderate antioxidative activity)into a priobiotic according to the international guidelines. Due to the cooperation between Estonian scientists from Bio-Competence Centre of Dairy Products (CC)  and University of Tartu and a dairy producer E-Piim Production , the development of biotechnology solution for incorporating it into Edam-type cheese, to employ the effects of the strain for the benefit of human health.Proving the blood pressure lowering and other human health-promoting properties of the developed functional food product the Heart-Friendly cheese Harmony comprising Lactobacillus Plantarum Tensia by Estonian scientist

Western lifestyle and nutritional patterns on one hand and longevity /aging of the population associated with age-related health conditions on the other hand have created a situation , where chronic illnesses and health problems represent the most serious threat to public health. Rising healthcare costs and treatment of diseases is becoming critically exhausting the resources and being  a burden to society even in highly developed countries.This innovative science-based preventive solutions have become essential. Synergy between researchers and food producing  companies is able to generate innovative health-supporting products that help to reduce disease risks.

All  over the world cardivascular disease remains one of the leading causes of death. Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are related to blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure sompromises normal function of  arteries and affects especially heart, brain and kidneys leading to increased risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney failure. It has been shown that individuals with elevated blood pressure (= or higher than 130/85mmHg) have a 1.5 to 2.5 times greater risk of experiencing heart attack,stroke or heart failure in 10 years than those whose blood pressure level is below 120/80mmHg (Vasan et al.2001). Overall, the prevalence of hypertension appears to be around 30-45% of the general population, with a steep increase with ageing (Mancia et al.2013). However long term exposure to elevated blood pressure in younger subjects leads to high and partly irreversible risk situation in middle age with potential shortening of otherwise longer life expectancy

The innovation is the result of the interdisciplinary reasearch combining the interest, skills and know-how of food industry with medical staff,  nutritionists, microbiologists,biochemists, statisticinas, and food technologistsof two countries: Estonia and Russia. Researschers of Bio-Competence Centre of Healthy Daily Products with two biggest  Estonian Universities- University of Tartu and University of Life-Science- and also Institute of Nutrition of Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow( Russia), were involved. Health effects of dairy products comprising Lactobacillus plantarum TENSIA have been tested on over 800 persons, incl.cheese(i.e.present innovation Heart-Friendly cheese Harmony comprising Lactobacillus  plantarum TENSIA )on over 700 persons. Owner of invention probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum TENSIA DSM 21380 is Bio-Competence Centre of Healthy  Dairy Products

Heart-friendly cheese Harmony comprising the strain Lactobacillus plantarum TENSIA was launched in 2009 in Estonia.According to reasearch results with subjects with metabolic syndrome from Institute of Nutrition (Russian Academy of Science) the Heart-friendly cheese Harmony is functional product with a special marking and E-Piim production Ltd has entered the Russian market. The launching Heart-friendly cheese Harmony took place in 17.Septembre 2012 in Estonian Embassy in Moscow. Selling in the biggest supermarket in Russia.
