Editor-in-Chief of Food Security: the science, sociology and economics of food production and access to food, a journal he co-founded with Peter Scott in 2009. He was attracted to Plant Pathology by its relevance to food security, a subject in which he has published over 100 papers. He has also published two books, Plant Disease Control: towards environmentally acceptable methods (1993) and Introduction to Plant Pathology (2003). Currently he holds an Honorary Chair at University College London and an Honorary Fellowship at Birkbeck College, University of London. He has been involved in numerous overseas projects, several of which were located in different African countries and has supervised Ph.D. students from these and other countries of the Developing World in topics directly concerned with plant disease problems affecting their food security

Thaer Yaseen (1973) graduated University of Damascus, Syria 1997. He is currently a Responsible of mycology activity in the Department of Integrated Pest Management of Mediterranean Fruit trees crops in the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (CIHEAM-MAIB). He holds his Ph.D in Plant Protection with a thesis entitled: Molecular diagnosis and biological control of Phytophthora citrus root rot, at Bari University - Italy; 2004, Department of plant protection and Applied Microbiology. He is involved in the following research lines: • Integrated Pest Management of Mediterranean Fruit trees (Olive, Citrus, Stone fruits and grape) and vegetables; • Detection and identification methods of fungal pathogens included in certification program for the production of fruit trees certified propagation materials; • Morphological and molecular characterisation of new species and/or isolates of known Mediterranean fungi and their epidemiological study; • Epidemiological study of fungal pathogens of fruit tree species in the Mediterranean; • Development and validation of detection and control protocols for pathogenic fungi; • Development and applications of DNA-Barcode for the identification of molecular markers of fungal species and insect pests; • Biological and innovative control of Post harvest pathogens using eco-combatable methods (Ozone and electrolyzed water and other physical methods. (more than 70 scientific papers and proceedings/communications).
CORNER SPEAKER: Alessandra Ricelli Short Bio
Alessandra Ricelli (1964) graduated in biological sciences and obtained her Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences at the University of Rome with a thesis entitled: Preventing ochratoxin A contamination in table grapes using biological control, has qualified as a mycologist inspector issued by the Ministry of Health. From 1996 to 1999 she worked at National Research Institute for Food and Nutrition as food technologist, from 2000 to 20001 at the University of Rome as junior researcher and from 2001 she works at National Research Council as researcher. Her research mainly concerns the control of the production of mycotoxins in different foodstuffs. Has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications and conference papers.
