Why Farmers Quit from Farming in Turkey?

Titre
Why Farmers Quit from Farming in Turkey?
Résumé
This paper assesses the forces driving farm exits using Turkish farm-level data. Data was collected by survey conducted in selected districts of Izmir. Totally 195 farmers are computed as sample size. The logit regression model was used to determine the factors affecting exiting from farming. The results indicate that farm type, farm size, agricultural subsidy, tenure, and farmer’s age are the important factors for abandonment. The structural transformation of agriculture depends on the improvement of farming structures and scales of farms. In addition, the pro-tection of rural areas is closely related to the sustain-ability of farming. As a result of the research rural development policies are suggested to increase the agricultural and non-agricultural employment.
